What didn’t work

 xpcd cache trick that worked at Triclops 3 no longer tricks xpcd to load xpc services from disk.

 launchctl will load plist from somewhere not on /System/Library/LaunchDaemons, but could not find a way to have launchctl do that from a reboot.

Persistence via UserEventPlugins / UserEventAgent

UserEventAgent Tries to load plugins by dlopen, then dlsym’ing plugins in /System/Library/UserEventPlugins/*.plugin, reading the symbol to call in the Info.plist of the plugin. parsed in alphabetical order.

Update Ramdisk

“Decrypting” the H6SURamDisk.dmg

1. Open in Hex Editor
2. Remove the initial 30 84 02 D8 00 15 16 04 49 4D 34 50 16 04 72 64 73 6B 16 01 30 04 84 02 D8 bytes(might look slightly different) until the start of the big section of 0x00’s.
3. jump to the decimal 1024 offset.
4. Find where the “H+” / 0x482B is starts, and remove 0’s until 0x482B starts at the 1024 offset.
5. Save as a new file, then double click to open the dmg.

OTA Updates

Brain downloading:

softwareupdateservicesd

calls [MSUUpdateBrainAssetLoader loadUpdateBrainWithOptions:progressHandler:] from MobileSoftwareUpdate.framework

connects to softwareupdated via XPC, sending commands to it, such as “CreateUpdateBrainConnection”

com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.CleanupPreparePathService handles cleaning up the update process, only referenced in the upgrade ramdisk.

No process seems to set nvram arg boot-command=upgrade, must be in the brain.

softwareupdated request assets via the MobileAsset framework, which seems to download assets, based on a type. software updated requests the ‘com.apple.MobileAsset.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrain’ asset type.

Asset types are defined somewhere in:

MobileAsset framework makes an xpc connection to com.apple.mobileassetd.

looking at /usr/libexec/pkd - seems to load keyboard plugins, reading in environment variables, creating an XPC object from the dictionary, and add that xpc object as a service.

pkd combines the keyboard plugin’s Info dictionary with another dictionary, called the [pluginDictionary], which contains the XPCService dictionary. In there, it checks for environment variables before running the extension.

iOS 8 Changes to aitd

1. aitd changed the format of the messages sent/received by the server to the client. All messages are formatted with an NSKeyedArchiver, which is just a specially formatted binary plist that describes your data. So, to fix this, the

• sendmsg() in mdf/wirservice.py need to convert to dictionaries to NSKeyedArchived plists, instead of just converting them to binary plists as its done for iOS 7.x. There is no known pythonic way of doing this, so you’ll need to write a Objective-C program that uses the NSKeyedArchiver class to create the data sent to aitd. Below is some sample code that does this conversion and writes it to a file:
• recvmsg() in mdf/wirservice.py also needs to convert from a NSKeyedArchiver data blob back to a parseable plist. Unfortuantely, there’s no easy way to do this. since the format is just a dictionary, a really hacky solution is to parse the dict manually for the data you want. -OR- use ctypes and use objc_msgSend() to call the objc methods.
